How gym membership relieves stress
Common signs of stress include negative or depressive feelings, disappointment with yourself, increased emotional reactions – more tearful or sensitive or aggressive, loneliness, loss of motivation commitment and confidence and mood swings. Long term stress can result in high blood pressure, heart disease and suppression of the immune system. But how does gym membership help? Doctors will often prescribe anti depressants or psycho-therapy but more and more health professionals are prescribing exercise as an effective first remedy for stress.
Exercising frequently is one of the best physical stress-reduction techniques available. Exercise not only improves your health and reduces stress, it also relaxes tense muscles and helps you to sleep. Exercise has a number of other positive benefits which you may not realise:
- Blood flow to your brain is improved bringing additional sugars and oxygen that may be needed when you are thinking intensely.
- When you think hard, the neurons of your brain function more intensely. As they do this, they can build up toxic waste products that can cause foggy thinking (you may have experienced the feeling that your brain has “turned to cotton wool”). By exercising, you speed the flow of blood through your brain, moving these waste products faster.
- Exercise can help the release of chemicals called endorphins into your blood stream. These give you a feeling of happiness and positively affect your overall sense of well-being. Physically fit people have less extreme physiological responses when under pressure than unfit people. Fit people are more able to handle the long- term effects of stress, without suffering ill health or burnout.
Physical fitness and mental health go hand in hand so investing in a gym membership can give far greater benefits that great abs or a pert figure.
